Most businesses pay between $500 and $5,000 a month for SEO, and agencies average about $3,200 a month. The single most common retainer bracket is still $501 to $1,000, which is also where most of the disappointment lives. This guide covers the ranges by pricing model and business size, what moves the number, how long the payback takes and how we scope. Our own starting point: SEO programs start at $3,000 a month, scoped to your market and your site, twelve months recommended.
Updated August 30, 2026. Market figures come from published provider surveys and buyer guides, each linked in the sources at the end and checked live on that date. IBIZDigital's own numbers are the same ones on our pricing page.
Three ways to pay for SEO, and what each one typically costs in the United States in 2026.
| Pricing model | Typical range | What the data says | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | $500 to $5,000 a month | 63 percent of businesses land here. The most common bracket is $501 to $1,000; agencies average $3,209; agency engagements on Clutch run $2,000 to $20,000 and average about $3,200. | Ongoing programs. Used by 78 percent of providers, because SEO is continuous work. |
| Hourly | $75 to $200 an hour | Most common bracket $75 to $100; average $111; US agencies about $148 and US consultants about $145 in the Semrush and Credo data; Clutch puts US agencies at $100 to $149. | Consulting, audits and specific questions, not a campaign. |
| Per project | $1,000 to $5,000 a project | Most common bracket $2,501 to $5,000; agency projects average about $9,500; audits alone run from a few hundred dollars to $30,000 for a large site. | One-time work: an audit, a migration, a site launch. |
| IBIZDigital | From $3,000 a month | Scoped to your market, the size of your site and the content we build or rewrite. One fixed number in writing before anything starts. | Businesses ready to give search twelve months, the investment we recommend. |
Retainer, hourly and per-project figures: Ahrefs, 439 providers polled; Clutch, SEO agency pricing guide 2026; Semrush citing the Credo provider survey; Backlinko, 300 professionals surveyed. Full citations under sources.
Two families of numbers exist, and cost guides usually mix them. Provider polls (Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Backlinko) survey everyone who sells SEO, including one-person shops serving local clients, so their most common bracket sits at $501 to $1,000 a month and 64 percent of the agencies in SE Ranking's panel charge under $1,000. Buyer guides and review platforms (Clutch, Forbes Advisor) describe the agencies businesses actually hire for growth, and there the normal range is $1,500 to $5,000 a month with an average near $3,200. When someone tells you SEO costs $800 a month, they are describing the first group. When someone tells you it costs $5,000, they are describing the second. Both are true, and they buy very different amounts of work.
The United States runs higher than the global figures: in the Ahrefs data, 79 percent of US and Canadian providers charge at least $1,001 a month, and in SE Ranking's survey 22 percent of US and Canadian agencies charge more than $2,000 a month against 9 percent in Europe. Half of the nearly 400 providers in the Credo survey require under $3,000 a month, which means the other half start at or above the number we start at.
Monthly SEO budgets by business type, from the guides that publish them, with the honest caveat that the size of the market matters more than the size of the company.
| Business | Typical monthly range | What it usually buys |
|---|---|---|
| Startup or single-location local business | $750 to $1,500 | Local SEO: Google Business Profile, local pages, citations and reviews. Local SEO averages $1,557 a month across all providers and about $1,819 at agencies. |
| Small business | $1,500 to $3,000 | A focused program on one market: technical fixes, a content plan sized to the site, on-page work and monthly reporting. |
| Mid-sized business | $1,500 to $5,000 | Several service lines or locations, more content, authority building and conversion work on the pages that rank. |
| Growth-stage, ecommerce or national | $2,000 to $20,000 | The Clutch agency range. Large catalogs, competitive national terms, technical programs and content at volume; the average engagement is about $3,200. |
| Enterprise | $10,000 and up | Multiple markets, languages or brands, dedicated teams and custom reporting. Providers serving worldwide markets average $3,474 a month even before enterprise scope. |

The same word, SEO, covers a $400 retainer and a $10,000 one. Here is what usually sits behind each.
Enough for a small local business to keep its Google Business Profile, citations and a few pages current, if the provider is honest about what the budget covers. It is not enough to fund new content and technical work every month, so at this level "SEO" often means thin pages and bought links. Backlinko's survey of 1,200 US small business owners found that clients spending under $500 a month were 75 percent more likely to be dissatisfied, and clients above $500 were 53 percent more likely to be extremely satisfied.
The most common bracket for small and mid-sized businesses. It buys a technical audit and the fixes, a content calendar sized to the site, on-page optimization, local SEO where it applies, and monthly reporting. The tradeoff is pace: one market, one service line at a time, and authority building that is steady rather than aggressive.
Where agency averages sit (about $3,200) and where IBIZDigital starts. Technical, content, on-page, AI search optimization, authority and conversion work on the pages that rank, all in the same plan, with reporting tied to leads and revenue rather than rankings alone. This is the level at which SEO stops being a checklist and becomes a growth channel that compounds.
National and ecommerce programs, several markets or languages, content at volume, digital PR, and engineering time on large sites. The Clutch agency range tops out at $20,000 a month and enterprise programs run past $50,000. The work is the same as the level below; there is simply much more of it, faster.
Every guide names the same drivers. These are the ones we walk through in your session, in the order they usually matter.
In a 2026 survey of 75 SEO experts, 67 percent said the first results show in two to four months, 82 percent said a measurable traffic increase takes about six months, and full results take twelve to twenty-four months. Local SEO is faster, at four to six months. Backlinko frames the same curve in phases: an initial phase in months one to three, growth in months four to twelve, and the return-on-investment phase from month twelve on.
That curve is why we recommend twelve months as the investment. Not because results wait a year; they usually do not. Because search compounds: the technical work, the content and the authority built in month one are still paying in month twelve, and a program stopped at month four or five has paid for the setup without collecting the return. The month-to-month "try it and see" retainer is the most expensive way to buy SEO, because it is the one most likely to stop right before it works.
New Jersey prices track the national agency ranges. The published starting points at New Jersey agencies we checked in August 2026 run from about $800 a month at the low end, for a single-location local program, to $2,600 to $3,000 a month at established agencies, with one South Jersey firm listing tiers at $3,000, $5,500 and $8,000 a month. Full-service marketing retainers in the state, which bundle SEO with content, paid media and strategy, are published at $8,000 to $20,000 a month.
What changes locally is the market, not the rate card. Local terms in one county (Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex, Mercer) move in three to six months; statewide terms and the New York and Philadelphia metro markets take six to twelve. IBIZDigital is in Freehold, in Monmouth County, and has been ranking New Jersey businesses since 1996. Our SEO programs start at $3,000 a month for New Jersey businesses and national ones alike; the difference is in the plan, not the price. More on the New Jersey agency page.
The same three steps for every client, so the number you sign is the number you pay.
Your market, your competitors, the customers you want more of, and what you have already tried. We look at your site and your search presence live, in the room. You leave with the first win named, whether or not you hire us.
We size the eight drivers above against your site: how much technical repair, how much content, which markets, how much authority to build, what to track. That becomes a twelve-month plan with the first ninety days spelled out.
You approve one monthly number before anything starts. Scope changes are priced and approved in writing before they happen. Everything we build stays yours, and if you leave, we remove our access on the last day and hand over documentation within five business days.
The same numbers as our pricing page. A starting price is the floor for a focused scope, and you see your own number in writing before anything begins.
Scoped to your market, the size of your site and the content we build or rewrite. Twelve months is the investment we recommend: results come sooner, and stopping early is how SEO fails.
SEO ServicesGetting cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, page by page. Twelve months recommended for the same reason as SEO. Most clients run both as one program, priced once.
AI SEO (GEO)If a twelve-month program is not right for your stage, we will say so in the session and tell you what to do first, with or without us. Every starting price across the company is on the pricing page.
Including us. Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO says much the same, and it is linked in the sources.
Most businesses pay between $500 and $5,000 a month for SEO. In the largest provider survey, 439 SEO providers polled by Ahrefs, the single most common retainer bracket was $501 to $1,000 a month, agencies averaged $3,209 a month, and in the United States and Canada 79 percent of providers charge at least $1,001 a month. Agency-level engagements reviewed on Clutch run $2,000 to $20,000 a month and average about $3,200. At IBIZDigital, SEO programs start at $3,000 a month, scoped to your market and your site, and twelve months is the investment we recommend.
Published guides put small business SEO at roughly $1,500 to $3,000 a month, with startups and single-location local businesses at $750 to $1,500 and mid-sized companies at $1,500 to $5,000. Local SEO averages about $1,557 a month across providers. Backlinko's survey of 1,200 US small business owners found that clients spending more than $500 a month were 53 percent more likely to be extremely satisfied, and clients spending under $500 were 75 percent more likely to be dissatisfied, which is the clearest data there is on cheap SEO.
Because it is labor, not software. A real program is a technical audit and the fixes that follow, content written and rewritten page by page, structure and schema so Google and AI engines can read the site, authority earned from other sites, and reporting tied to revenue, month after month. The number moves with how competitive your market is, how big your site is, how much content has to be built, and how far behind the leaders you start. What looks expensive is usually the cost of doing all of it instead of one piece of it.
Rarely, and it is often worse than doing nothing. Retainers under $500 a month cannot fund the content and technical work that rankings require, so the money tends to go into thin pages and bought links that Google's spam policies penalize. Sixty-four percent of the agencies in SE Ranking's 260-agency survey charged under $1,000 a month, and Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO warns about guarantees and secret techniques. If the budget is tight, a smaller program done properly beats a large one done badly; we will tell you which in the session.
New Jersey prices track the national agency ranges. Published starting points at New Jersey agencies we checked in August 2026 run from about $800 a month at the low end to $2,600 to $3,000 a month at established agencies, with tiers of $3,000, $5,500 and $8,000 a month at one South Jersey firm. Local terms in a single county move faster and cost less than statewide or national terms. IBIZDigital is in Freehold, in Monmouth County, and our SEO programs start at $3,000 a month for New Jersey businesses and national ones alike.
First movement usually shows in two to four months and a measurable traffic increase within six, according to a 2026 survey of 75 SEO experts; full results take twelve to twenty-four months because search compounds. That is why we recommend twelve months as the investment: results arrive sooner, but a program stopped at month four or five throws away the gains right as they start to stack. Our reporting is tied to leads and revenue, not rankings alone, so you can see the payback as it happens.
Monthly retainers are the standard for ongoing SEO: 78 percent of providers offer them, because the work is continuous. Hourly, $75 to $200 an hour in most guides, suits consulting and specific questions. Per-project, most commonly $2,501 to $5,000, suits one-time work such as an audit, a migration or a site launch. IBIZDigital runs SEO as a monthly program from $3,000 a month with one fixed number in writing, and scopes one-time projects such as migrations separately.
SEO programs start at $3,000 a month, scoped to your market, the size of your site and the content we build or rewrite, and twelve months is the investment we recommend. The starting point covers the full program: technical SEO, content and on-page work, AI search optimization (GEO), local SEO where it applies, authority building and revenue-focused reporting. You see one fixed number in writing after your free AI Growth Session and before anything starts, and everything we build, along with the Search Console and analytics access, stays yours. Every starting price is on our pricing page.
AI SEO (generative engine optimization) programs start at $3,000 a month at IBIZDigital, on the same twelve-month recommendation as SEO, because citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews are earned page by page the way rankings are. Most clients run AI SEO and traditional SEO as one program, priced once, since the technical work, the content and the entity signals overlap. Your market and how much of your site needs answer-first structure set the number.
Yes to both, in the right order. The basics are free and worth doing yourself: a complete Google Business Profile, a fast site, honest page titles, and answering the questions customers actually ask. What you cannot do yourself, unless it is your job, is the sustained technical, content and authority work that moves competitive terms, month after month, while you run the business. The data on paying for it is clear at the right level: small businesses spending over $500 a month are far more satisfied than those spending less, and agency programs average about $3,200 a month because that is what the work costs. If your market is small and your site is sound, we will tell you in the session that you do not need us yet.
Twelve months is the investment we recommend for SEO and AI SEO, and it is what we scope for, because it is how long it takes to keep the results, not to get them. If a twelve-month program is not right for your stage, we will say so in the session and point you to what to do first. Paid ads, social media and agent maintenance are month to month with thirty days' notice, because those results show up faster and the commitment should match.
